Oh My August

If I'm not around much in August it's because I'm curled up in a corner with a bottle of wine.

I have to pack up and move in August (same area, but they're raising rent on my house so we can't afford to stay here)

Aug 1-8 is GISHWHES
Aug 1-6 my in-laws are coming to AZ to visit
Aug 3-6 my husband will be out of state doing training
Aug 5th is my oldest son's first day of school...ever
Aug 17-23 is the next Bout of Books read-a-thon
Aug 17th is also the Felicia Day book signing

All of that...plus packing and moving...and taking a kid to school (he's been homeschooled until now) every week day.

I'm already overwhelmed.

What I Read Recently

I thought I'd do a lot of reading while doing the recovery thing.

It turns out TV watching is easier when you're high on pain meds. Make a note!

I did read a couple of things though.

After attending years of public school and for reasons unknown, sixteen-year-old Evelyn Hollyander AKA Evie, finds herself suddenly "dumped" at Pinehurst, a stuffy private school for the Mageia—the children of magic. Gone are the days of Geometry and Keyboarding, Evie’s schedule now consists of classes that teach defensive spells and charms against the deadly creatures of the Underworld. She discovers that her magical abilities are far more pronounced than that of her classmates, or even her teachers for that matter. She's forced into sixth period PE, boys only “boot-camp” for Slayers; and is taunted by some of the students for being the only female Slayer—ever!

The actual link has more but it pretty much spoils the book. It's FREE right now...for good reason.
It's a fun book, mostly, but there is a serious lack of proofreading (dropped quotations and the like) and the ending is incredibly rushed. Like, it goes from 0 to throwing an ending at you in a few chapters.
I gave it 3 out of 5 stars I think. I'm glad I didn't pay for it.
These are not the mild-mannered maidens of your childhood. These are fallen princesses and fierce women with no recollection of who they are, where they came from, or how they arrived in a mysterious town called Everafter. All they know is that they've been sentenced to a stretch in a half-way house by a malicious judge with an ax to grind. They've been stripped of their freedom, their kingdoms, and their true loves. Now, they have nothing left to lose.

Now THIS was a good book! I snagged it for 99 cents but it's worth full price. At first I was hesitant because fairy tale retellings seem to be popular right now and I was worried it would be another overdone story.

It's a quick read that I didn't mind flying through. It was fun and engaging. It had me giggling at times and I'm actually looking forward to the next book in the series. (It comes out Sept 2015 with a third book slated for winter 2016) 5/5 stars here!

So, I had a seizure.

Remember how in the previous post I discussed how my surgery was complication free and told you I'd lost barely any blood?

Good times. Goooood times.

Monday afternoon that all changed.

This is your official warning that this post will be gross. Because bodies are gross. My body did super gross things for the last couple of days. Get out while you still can!!!!!!

Me for the last couple of days
I started bleeding at 4:45pm on Monday afternoon. Called the doctor's office and was told it happens and to head to the ER if I started soaking a pad an hour (that's the general rule for vaginal bleeding, peeps. An overnight/super pad an hour is TOO MUCH)

That happened so I went in that night. They ran blood tests and did an ultrasound (which was torture) and found nothing. Pelvic exam said my stitches were intact so they sent me home.

Basically, everyone (including several internet friends and myself) thought I was overreacting.

I slept in the guest room to avoid bleeding all over my husband (isn't marriage grand?) and was up several times to change my overnight pads...that I was still soaking.

There's other gross stuff that was going on but I'll save you those details.

I don't remember what time it was...probably close to 9am? Maybe 8am?

I got up to pee and change my pad AGAIN and found I was really dizzy. Now, I've passed out exactly one time before in my life after donating blood on an empty stomach and jumping up too fast. So I recognized the early warning signs.

I called for Stefan (I was in the guest bathroom and he was in the master bedroom) and leaned against the wall next to the toilet...

....and woke up on the floor, covered in a cold sweat, with Stefan on the phone to 911.

Apparently, he came running and asked what was wrong. I started swaying where I sat and replied, "I need to go back to the hospital" in a monotone voice. He tried to get me to explain but I was unresponsive. I sat up straight and he could see my pupils were dilated...and I started convulsing. He guided me to the floor and onto my side (note: this is all you can do for someone having a seizure. Floor, roll onto their side, pad space around their head if they're thrashing a lot, leave them alone to finish the convulsions). He called 911 and explained.

I have no memory of this. At all. I woke up to the word "seizure" and my first thought was "who's having a seizure??" Annnnd then I realized the cabinet was inches from my face. Oh.

The emergency crew must have been super close because they arrived in minutes. Stefan was able to get the boys upstairs before they arrived.

To pain a picture....I'm still laying half naked on the bathroom floor, blood everywhere (and this is after my husband cleaned me up some) when SIX DUDES walk into my house.

My life is glamorous, y'all. You don't even know.

I'm taken back immediately at the ER and worked on. I was there pretty much all day.

They never said, but I assume the cause of the seizure was severe dehydration. I wasn't good about drinking fluids that day, I vomited the OJ I tried to drink that night, and I lost enough blood to feel it. My hemoglobin was low but not low enough to need a transfusion. (I was told to "drink plenty of fluids and eat a steak" by the on-call doc)

The cause of the bleeding is still somewhat of a mystery. My GYN (that did the surgery) was in the hospital that day (Tues is surgery day for him) and he came down to fix me. Apparently he could see the "collection of blood" causing a "firm area" on the inside and roughly where it was coming out (it had slowed significantly by then). He cauterized with silver nitrate (torture sticks) and that was that.

So I'm home now. On bed rest to make sure it finishes healing. I'm sore. I'm still tired. I'm still slightly dehydrated despite being given 2 large bags of fluid at the hospital (which just goes to show how dehydrated I was going in...)

But I'm okay. My husband handled things perfectly and was my rock throughout the day. HUGE Kudos to his office for allowing him to stay home when I needed him because I can't imagine what would have happened if he hadn't been there yesterday morning.

I'm full up on excitement for the year.

Here's to a boring second half of 2015.
