Okay, maybe that's just me. In any case, it's my favorite show (second only to Buffy but first place in shows currently on TV)
At first glance, it's a creepy show with attractive actors.
That's it, that's the show. Pack it in, post over.
Just kidding. Please don't leave.
Without reading too much into it (I'm not that deep into the fandom where I start wondering the secret implications of "Busty Asian Beauties.") I've come up with a list of positive messages you can glean from the show.
There will be some spoilers but I'll try to keep them light.
#1: Family Doesn't End (or Begin) With Blood.
But they'd all take bullets for each other...and occasionally do. The best part, most aren't related by blood.
The Winchester boys will gladly bring people under their wing and treat them like family. This means caretaking just as much as pranks and good natured teasing. It means calling someone on their crap but having their back in battle.
Blood relation doesn't matter to a Winchester. The connections you make with people are more important than worrying about how much DNA you have in common.
#2: Everyone Is Good At Something
Not everyone is good at everything. I'd never put Dean down in front of a computer unless I wanted a basic Google search done or wanted to watch porn. I wouldn't send Castiel in to question a family or sweet talk a guard.
But they all manage to work together...most of the time.
So take what you're good at and celebrate it. Find a way to make yourself better at that thing instead of attempting to do ALL THE THINGS.
Unless your thing involves killing people...in which case, try to get better at something else.
#3: It's Okay To Be Weird
Okay, maybe it is...but it sounded good right?
In the world of Supernatural, normal is boring. Each of the boys tries "normal" at least once and fails out. When you know what's out there, you can't be content to live an Apple-Pie Life.
Like attracts or senses like. If you're comfortable in your weirdness, you're going to attract those with similar weirdness. Then you can be weird together.
But first, you have to accept it.
What is "normal" anyway? A previous counselor's eyes lit up the day I said, "I just want to be normal."
His reply, "Okay, describe normal for me. That way we know what we're working toward."
I couldn't. I can't. Because "normal" isn't real. Everyone has their own brand of weirdness. Some of us just wear our buttons a little more proudly than others. (Or tinfoil hats...you do you)
#4 People Can Change and Grow
Castiel becomes a friend to them; not just a heartless soldier. Dean may run around and sleep with barflies whenever he gets the chance...but he'll also give a pep talk to a woman at a spa whose husband left her for not being "pretty enough." (Basically, screw that guy)
You can take the circumstances given to you and use them to grow as a person. You can fight through Hell and back (literally in some cases here) and come out stronger on the other side.
However...
#5 Not Everyone Is Good On The Inside
Not everyone is worth your energy waiting for them to change.
There have been many baddies on the show with no growth or change. There was no saving them.
Sometimes, you have to let go of the negative in your life. That may be a person or a place or an occupation...because not everything is worth saving. Sometimes walking away (don't pull a Winchester and kill it) is the best course of action.
You have to know when to fight and when to (figuratively) Salt And Burn. Don't miss out on the next phase of your life.
#6 Don't Give Up on YOU
Because...seriously.
If Dean can continue to get out of bed in the morning, I can too.
Always keep fighting for YOU. Find your reason for getting out of bed in the morning. That may be friends/family or it may be because you can't make coffee from your mattress. Find what keeps you from throwing in the towel. Hold on to it tight because YOU ARE WORTH IT.
